Back to the roots; Defected in Ibiza 2012
Returning to their residency at Pacha once again, Defected are unveiling the Ibiza strain of their global house brand for the year with announcements for the line-ups that will feature across the summer, alongside a 3-CD compilation mixed by label boss Simon Dunmore.
Holding back on giving the entire game away before it’s started, there’s still plenty of spaces to be filled in the dates spanning from May 26 to September 29, but already some house titans have been announced for the weekly Saturday night slot.
A TIP personal favourite is the announcement of Inner City Live, featuring Detroit techno originator Kevin Saunderson and vocalist Paris Grey. You’ll know them best for evergreen party starters “Good Life” and “Big Fun”. Also featuring on the line-ups so far are Defected regulars such as Dennis Ferrer, The Shapeshifters, Junior Jack & Kid Crème, Bob Sinclair and Dimitri From Paris.
There’s also a pleasing old-school garage nod in the shape of multiple appearances from MK (also know as Marc Kinchen), as well as the electro-tinged style of Riva Starr. Interestingly, Solomun has been snapped up for a few dates despite Sankeys holding him aloft as one of their prime residents for the season.
“Our line-ups are the most musically diverse on Ibiza and the 2012 season reflects the full diversity of house music, our releases and our sound” says Dunmore. That might be a stretch in a season that is seeing the goalposts of Ibizan music getting ever moved, but there’s no denying Defected are serious about their house music.
In reflection of this, 2012’s Defected Ibiza compilation is a personal journey from Dunmore to highlight not just his favourite current jams, but also a sizable amount of early influences from classic artists such as Chez Damier and Romanthony. The label claim the mix is deeper than you might expect, which is claimed to be a kickback against (or in conjunction with) the explosion in interest in dance music of late.
“Many DJs, producers and clubbers do not wish to reside in a generic musical high street,” Dunmore muses in the press release for the compilation. “The commercialism of EDM has brought those that enjoy alternative genres closer together, and I think that the music selected reflects this.”
Hold tight for further thoughts from the Defected main man, but in the mean time you can catch full details of the dates at Pacha right here at the official site.
